April Newsletter

It is FINALLY Spring and the warm weather is coming!

It was a long and cold winter but we are so excited Spring is here in Grade 1/2. I hope you all enjoyed the March break with your kids. As a school, we participated in Rocks and Rings. We loved learning about curling! We had a couple matches against our peers in the gym. It was so much fun. We also celebrated Shrove Tuesday and the beginning of Lent. We have discussed how God gave up a lot for us and sacrificed His own life to better ours. During Lent, we sacrifice things for Him and find ways to grow closer to God. This could be doing an act of kindness everyday.

In Language, we will be finishing up important parts of a story (characters, setting, problem, beginning, middle and end, etc). We will be revisiting descriptive writing and I have a very fun educational activity for you to do at home with your child! The activity is explained in the zip lock bag that will be going home with him/her, but it will be posted here in case you and your child want to start thinking about it! Please send back the duotang and egg in the zip lock bag when the activity is completed.

Grade 1/2 Families,

Easter is approaching quickly! I thought this would be a fun educational activity for you and your child to do at home. I will be sending home a giant gold Easter egg. Please complete this activity the first night the Easter egg goes home!

  1. Your child is to select something in your home to put in the egg. Please make sure it is not anything breakable. It must be small enough for the egg to close.
  2. Your child is to use descriptive language to describe what’s in the egg. What does it do? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Please have your child use a pencil to write. They need to write 3 complete sentences (Clue #1. It has 4 wheels. Clue #2. It has an engine. Clue #3. It transports people from one place to another.).
  3. Your child will present his/her clues to the class. His/Her peers will guess what’s in the Easter egg!

Thank you for participating in this Easter activity. Have fun!

Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school!

In Math, we are finishing up place value (ex. the number 25 has two groups of ten and 5 ones). We have enjoyed all the interactive place value centres while learning about tens and ones. Hopefully you have enjoyed watching our learning on twitter! We will be moving on to double-digit addition and subtraction soon!

In Science, Grade 1's will finish up their unit on Energy in our Lives and Grade 2's will finish up our unit their unit on States of Matter. Grade 1's will be learning about Daily and Seasonal Changes and the Grade 2's will be learning about Air and Water in the Environment.
