February Newsletter

We have had an awesome start to 2019 year in Grade 1/2!

January was a very long and cold month so we are happy February is finally here! We are getting back into the swing of things in class. We are trying to remember to put our shoes, hats, mittens, etc. in our bins so we can always find them when needed. We are also working on keeping our classroom is neat, tidy and organized everyday. We have started meditation every Wednesday in the chapel with Mrs. Levasseur. It is a great way for your child to start the second part of their day. It helps them take some quiet time to themselves, reflect and get in the green zone for learning. #BEWELL

In Language, we are working on sounding out words to create sentences. I am reminding the children to use their personal dictionaries and word wall to help them. We have wrote a descriptive writing piece for if they were stuck in a snow globe. They used their five senses and wrote about what they would feel, see, smell, taste and hear. We have learned about acrostic poems and wrote one for a friend. Next, we will be focusing on stories and going more into depth about different parts of a story (characters, setting, problem, etc). Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school!

In Math, we just finished learning about time. We learned how to tell time on an analog and digital clock to the hour and half past the hour (Grade 1's) and to the quarter minutes (Grade 2's). We are now learning about money and different names for coins/bills. We are adding up coins and bills to make different values/amounts! Please continue to practice counting forwards and backwards with your child at home.

In Science, Grade 1's are learning about energy in our lives! We have discussed what energy is, energy chains, different sources of energy and are currently doing an experiment with two plants. We are watering two plants everyday but only one is getting sunlight. We are making predictions and recording the data every week! Ask your child what changes they have seen so far and why. Grade 2's are exploring different properties of liquids, solids and gases. We have done a couple fun experiments. We had a liquid race with oil, maple syrup and ketchup. We observed the properties of each liquid, made predictions about which one would be the fastest sliding down the pan and recorded our data. Ask your child which one was the fastest and why! We have also looked at different objects that float and sink. We love exploring with solids, liquids and gases!

In Religion, the grade 2's have started sacrament preparation for their first communion. We have read stories and discussed ways to get along with our friends and siblings. February 18th-22nd is kindness week, so we will be focusing on how to be kind to our friends, family, and ourselves!

I have attached your child's username and password for Zorbits in the front of their agenda. This is a math website they can practice a number of different skills on at home.
