June Newsletter

Where has the time gone!!! It has been an absolute pleasure teaching your children this year in Grade 1/2. I can't believe how much they have progressed and grown over the school year. I hope you all have an amazing summer. Relax, spend time outside together and stay cool! In language, we have finished writing our narrative stories (including characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle and end) and revisited making predictions when reading stories. We are going to learn about inferences and persuasive writing in the month of June. Over the summer, please continue to practice reading with your child every night. It is so important they keep up the amazing work they have achieved all year. A great writing activity is to keep a journal and write about their day each night or every second night. This will help them continue to practice writing word wall words and sounding out unfamiliar words. In math, we just finished 3D shapes and graphing. We are almost done meas

May Newsletter

Spring is in the air! April was a very busy month in Grade 1/2! I can't believe it's already May and there's only 2 months left in the school year! Congratulations to a couple Grade 2 students in our class who received their first communion! It was a lovely mass to celebrate you becoming closer to God. The Grade 1's had an awesome time at the Museum of Nature. We got to explore and visit many galleries. We also got to be paleontologists.  It was so cool! Lastly, we celebrated the resurrection  of Jesus. He is Risen. I hope you all had a great Easter weekend! In Language,  we will be writing our own narratives. We have learned about characters, setting, problems and solutions. We are very excited to create our own stories to finish off this unit. Then we will be learning about inferences (making an educated guess or conclusion that is drawn from evidence and conclusion) and persuasive writing (when you write to influence or change another's thoughts or actions).

It is FINALLY Spring and the warm weather is coming! It was a long and cold winter but we are so excited Spring is here in Grade 1/2. I hope you all enjoyed the March break with your kids. As a school, we participated in Rocks and Rings. We loved learning about curling! We had a couple matches against our peers in the gym. It was so much fun. We also celebrated Shrove Tuesday and the beginning of Lent. We have discussed how God gave up a lot for us and sacrificed His own life to better ours. During Lent, we sacrifice things for Him and find ways to grow closer to God. This could be doing an act of kindness everyday.  In Language, we will be finishing up important parts of a story (characters, setting, problem, beginning, middle and end, etc). We will be revisiting descriptive writing and I have a very fun educational activity for you to do at home with your child! The activity is explained in the zip lock bag that will be going home with him/her, but it will be posted here in case

February has come and gone... very quickly!! February was a short and fun month in Grade 1/2. We celebrated Valentine's Day (I hope you all loved the picture I printed of your child), Winter Play Day, National Sweater Day (Grade 1's were happy St. Michael's saved energy!), Family Day and focused a lot on being kind. February is a month of spreading love and showing kindness to others. Grade 1/2's have done a great job at that! If March is going to be anything like February please continue to send your child to school with snow pants, hats, mittens, etc. to stay warm at recess.  We really enjoy going to the chapel every Wednesday for meditation with Mrs. Levasseur. It helps them take some quiet time to themselves, reflect and get in the green zone for learning. #BEWELL In Language, we are still working on sounding out words to create sentences. I am reminding the children to use taught strategies, their personal dictionaries and word wall to help them. In March,  we wi

We have had an awesome start to 2019 year in Grade 1/2! January was a very long and cold month so we are happy February is finally here! We are getting back into the swing of things in class. We are trying to remember to put our shoes, hats, mittens, etc. in our bins so we can always find them when needed. We are also working on keeping our classroom is neat, tidy and organized everyday. We have started meditation every Wednesday in the chapel with Mrs. Levasseur. It is a great way for your child to start the second part of their day. It helps them take some quiet time to themselves, reflect and get in the green zone for learning. #BEWELL In Language, we are working on sounding out words to create sentences. I am reminding the children to use their personal dictionaries and word wall to help them. We have wrote a descriptive  writing piece for if they were stuck in a snow globe. They used their five senses and wrote about what they would feel, see, smell, taste and hear. We have le

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a fun, safe and relaxing holiday! Wishing you all the best in 2019. It is still very cold outside. Please make sure your child comes to school with warm attire (i.e., hat, mittens, snow pants, extra socks, etc).  In Language, we are working on sounding out words to create sentences. I am reminding the children to use their personal dictionaries and word wall to help them. We will be starting descriptive writing soon! For example, describing popcorn with our five senses. What does popcorn look, feel, taste, sound and smell like. Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school! In Math, we are finishing up 2-D shapes and moving onto time. We have reviewed and learned a variety of 2D shapes and how many sides/vertices they have. They have also learned how to sort shapes by geometric propertie

Well... 2018 is coming to an end! I am so fortunate and blessed to end 2018 as your child's teacher. It is a year I will never forget! I would like to take a quick minute for a little reflection and share something with you all. This is my first year as a permanent teacher with the Ottawa Catholic School Board. I am so lucky to be the Grade 1/2 teacher at St. Michael. It is such a great community to be a part of. I got engaged the day before my 25th birthday and will be getting married in May 2019. The kids said they will call me Ms. McCarney forever! A lot has happened in 2018, but the most special memories I will cherish forever are with your children; learning and growing with them every day! Thank you for sending your child to school with warm clothes for recess. Please allow time for your child to practice zipping up his/her jacket independently and getting ready quickly! In Language, we are finishing up procedural writing (ex. steps one would take to build a snowman). We
