May Newsletter

Spring is in the air!

April was a very busy month in Grade 1/2! I can't believe it's already May and there's only 2 months left in the school year! Congratulations to a couple Grade 2 students in our class who received their first communion! It was a lovely mass to celebrate you becoming closer to God. The Grade 1's had an awesome time at the Museum of Nature. We got to explore and visit many galleries. We also got to be paleontologists. It was so cool! Lastly, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus. He is Risen. I hope you all had a great Easter weekend!

In Language, we will be writing our own narratives. We have learned about characters, setting, problems and solutions. We are very excited to create our own stories to finish off this unit. Then we will be learning about inferences (making an educated guess or conclusion that is drawn from evidence and conclusion) and persuasive writing (when you write to influence or change another's thoughts or actions). Thank you for taking part in our Easter descriptive writing activity. The children have really loved presenting their three clues to the class. It was so much fun guessing what was in the egg! Thank you for your support in this activity! Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school!

In Math, we finished up place value and double-digit subtraction/addition! Please continue to practice single-digit and double-digit addition/subtraction with your child at home. In May, we are learning about symmetry! Many shapes and objects are symmetrical (can be cut/folded in half and are identical) and can have more than one line of symmetry. Can you find any in your house? Tweet them out to me! We will be learning about 3D shapes next!

In Science, Grade 1's are learning about Daily and Seasonal Changes and the Grade 2's are learning about Air and Water in the Environment. We just did a very cool balloon experiment. I asked the question, "Does air take up space?" Most of the children said no because air is everywhere. I blew air in a balloon and it got bigger. We learned that air does take up space! Grade 1's are learning about the plant cycle and Grade 2's are learning about the water cycle.

In Religion, we are discussing how to take care of our bodies. God gave us the gift of our bodies and it is important to take care of them by eating good food, brushing our teeth, keeping our bodies clean, getting lots of fresh air/exercise, etc.
