December Newsletter

Well... 2018 is coming to an end! I am so fortunate and blessed to end 2018 as your child's teacher. It is a year I will never forget! I would like to take a quick minute for a little reflection and share something with you all. This is my first year as a permanent teacher with the Ottawa Catholic School Board. I am so lucky to be the Grade 1/2 teacher at St. Michael. It is such a great community to be a part of. I got engaged the day before my 25th birthday and will be getting married in May 2019. The kids said they will call me Ms. McCarney forever! A lot has happened in 2018, but the most special memories I will cherish forever are with your children; learning and growing with them every day!

Thank you for sending your child to school with warm clothes for recess. Please allow time for your child to practice zipping up his/her jacket independently and getting ready quickly!

In Language, we are finishing up procedural writing (ex. steps one would take to build a snowman). We are organizing our thoughts using first, then, next, last. We will be learning how to write a letter this month. A big writing activity will be writing a letter to Santa. Please continue to read with your child at home, practice weekly word wall words, and write in their journals! If you have any questions about the homework folder please do not hesitate to call me at school!

In Math, we are finishing up repeating, growing and shrinking patterns. We have been creating and expanding patterns by a variety of attributes like colours, shapes, sizes, textures, etc. We have also been creating different number patterns. Ex. 2, 4, ___, 8, 10. The missing number is 6 because we add 2 every time. Throughout December, we will be working on 2-D shapes and symmetry.

In Science, Grade 1's have completed the structures unit and Grade 2's have completed the simple machines unit. The structures and amusement parks they created were well thought out and so awesome! Next, Grade 1's will be exploring matter and energy in our lives. Grade 2's will be exploring different properties of liquids and solids.

In Religion, we will be focusing on Advent and preparing for the birth of Baby Jesus. The first Sunday of Advent is December 2nd, second Sunday of Advent is December 9th, third Sunday of Advent is December 16th and fourth Sunday of Advent is December 23rd.

I have attached your child's username and password for Zorbits in the front of their agenda. This is a math website they can practice a number of different skills on at home.

Please enjoy this very exciting time of year with your children. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday! We have many fun activities and days to celebrate at school before they are home with you all for 2 weeks! I will be adding some more important dates to come!
